Will history repeat itself in Mabank?
It has a chance.
The Mabank Lady Panthers claimed a second-place finish in the Region II-AAA Golf Tournament at Tanglewood Golf Course in Pottsboro to earn a trip to the state tournament.
Where does history figure into it?
Next month will mark the 20th anniversary of the Mabank boys’ Class 3A state championship in 1988.
The Lady Panthers are scheduled to make their trip to Austin in two weeks to compete in the state tournament May 8-9 at Roy Kizer Golf Course.
The Athens Lady Hornets also competed in the regional tournament, finishing 14th.
Mabank was led by Macey Thomas. With rounds of 88 and 95, Thomas was eighth in medalist play with a 183.
Lauren Slaton carded a 194 for the Lady Panthers, followed by Katie Hibbs (196), Whitney Evans (201) and Caitlyn Jones (206).
Frisco Wakeland took the regional title, finishing 39 shots up on the Lady Panthers. Spring Hill was four shots back of Mabank.
Ashley Darby was the top performer for Athens with a 224. Darby had rounds of 110 and 114 on the Par 72 course.
Also competing for the Lady Hornets were Sam Harris, Shaun Julian, Caitlin McClenny and Bethany McElhaney.
