School band director arrested in Malakoff

By RICH FLOWERS

MALAKOFF — The Malakoff Independent School District has amended its Nov. 27 board meeting agenda to address the employment status of its band director, who was arrested last Wednesday.

According to information from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department, Jeremy Robert Jordan, 28, is charged with being involved in an improper relationship with a student, a second-degree felony. Lt. Pat McWilliams, Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer, said the alleged victim is a 17-year-old female student.

Jordan — who is in his first year at Malakoff — was booked into the Henderson County Jail Wednesday afternoon and released on $10,000 bond. HCSD Investigator Kevin Hanes will lead the investigation and report his findings to the District Attorney’s Office for presentation to a grand jury.

According to MISD Superintendent Larry Hulsey, the school board will determine in closed session whether Jordan will be sent a notice of proposed suspension without pay, or a notice of termination.

Meanwhile, Hulsey said, the band program will continue without missing a performance.

“We have an experienced assistant who will step in,” Hulsey said.

Denita Rood, who was hired this summer from Mason ISD, will direct until permanent decisions are made regarding the band program.

“We have a great bunch of kids. They won’t miss any games or concerts,” Hulsey said.

High school principal Randy Perry briefed his staff last Thursday morning about the situation, Hulsey said. He was not sure how band students were informed about Jordan’s arrest.
