Clarification...

Last week’s story on Tri-County Soccer Association Coach Bruce Tower reported that the Provenge clinical trial he and 250 other volunteers submitted to for treatment of advanced prostate cancer earlier this year had been approved by the FDA.

According to a report in the Seattle Times, the FDA has not approved the drug, but instead issued an approvable letter to Dendreon, the company which developed the revolutionary immunotherapy treatment for Prostate cancer, on May 9.

Provenge extended patients' lives with few side effects in smaller clinical trials, and Dendreon had hoped it could become an immediate new option for the disease.

The drug did, as reported, work for Tower.

The FDA reportedly wants more information about the effects of the drug and a final decision is not expected for several years.
