Statewide sales tax collections up

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced last week that the state collected $1.7 billion in sales tax revenue in June, up 8.4 percent compared to June 2007.
State sales tax collections in June and local sales tax allocations in July represent sales that occurred in May and were reported to the Comptroller in June.
“While we have seen the national economy slowing, growth in Texas sales tax revenue continues at a steady pace,” Combs said.
Gun Barrel City received $268,706.71 for July. The 2007 allocation was $238,925.51.
Nine Henderson County towns recorded gains including: Malakoff, 66.54 percent; Caney City, 40.07 percent; Murchison, 32.77 percent; Eustace, 21.33 percent; Coffee City, 22.12 percent; Chandler, 12.80 percent; Gun Barrel City, 12.46 percent; Brownsboro, 0.80 percent and Berryville, 0.03 percent.
Athens along with, seven municipalities saw allocations dip in July: Payne Springs, (-66.03 percent) Poynor, (-65.37); Tool, (-12.06); Seven Points, (-10.79); Log Cabin, (-6.18); and Trinidad, (-0.28).
Year to date figures remained on the plus side for most cities including Gun Barrel City.
Communities with year to date increases include: Log Cabin, 41.87 percent; Caney City, 18.51 percent; Coffee City 18.49 percent; Murchison 17.72 percent; Brownsboro, 8.36 percent, Chandler 7.50 percent; Berryville 7.80 percent; Malakoff, 5.33 percent; Tool, 4.32 percent; Gun Barrel City, 3.25 percent and Trinidad, 2.35 percent.
Decreases for the first five months of 2008 were recorded in: Poynor (-23.06) percent; Payne Springs, (-15.60) percent, Eustace, (-5.41) percent; and Seven Points, (-1.22) percent.
Combs sent July sales tax allocations of $311.9 million to Texas cities, up 2.6 percent compared to July 2007. This calendar year, city sales tax allocations are up 5 percent compared to the same time period last year.
Texas counties received sales tax payments of $28.9 million, up 5.5 percent compared to last July. So far this year, sales tax allocations to counties are up 6.3 percent compared to 2007. Henderson County does not collect a sales tax, but the combined rebate for all cities in the county totaled $785,989.75, increasing from $762,152.62.
Combs sent $17.5 million to 135 special purpose taxing districts, up 19.5 percent compared to last July. Ten local transit systems received $109.3 million in sales tax allocations, up 9.1 percent compared to a year ago.
