New Principal wants MHS to be ‘the beacon of the district’

By Travis Kees

The Mabank Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to elevate Assistant Principal Brad Koskelin to the position of Principal of Mabank High School on June 23.

Koskelin spent five years as the assistant principal of MHS. He has 15 years experience in education, 12 of which have been with MHS.

He spent the first seven years as a teacher/coach before moving into administration at MHS.

Koskelin was born in Wisconsin and has lived in various states growing up, including two years in Israel.

He graduated in 1988 from Richland High School in North Richland Hills.

His college career began at Northwestern Oklahoma State University on a football scholarship and graduated in 1992 with a degree in History and Physical Education.

Koskelin also graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2003 with a master's degree in education and principal's certification.

He completed the necessary course work for a superintendent's certification from UT Tyler in 2004.

Koskelin is married with two children. His wife of 17 years, Shela, a teacher, is the Career and Technology Coordinator at MHS.

His daughter Jordan is an 8th grader at Mabank Junior High and his son Zane is a 5th grader at Mabank Intermediate.

Tha administrator believes that his experience with the district, the teachers, the parents and the students of the district will help contribute to his success as principal.

“I’ve been here for 12 years now and think that my knowledge of those different areas is going to help take the school to the next level,” said Koskelin

“Our goal is to be the beacon of the district.”

He believes he can succeed in that goal.

“We have a great faculty and we have good kids that always step up and go the extra mile, doing whatever we ask of them,” he said.

“We have a very dedicated staff here and they are willing to do whatever it takes to see that our kids succeed in every way possible.”

Dr. Russell Marshall superintendent of the Mabank Independent School District also believes that Koskelin will succeed. That is why he recommended him for the position, he said.

“Mr. Koskelin has a track record of excellence as an educator, in the class room and in administration. We are confident that he will transfer that leadership into the principalship,” said Dr. Marshall.
