K of C Scholarship Awards
Knights of Columbus, Mary Queen of Heaven Council #122253, Malakoff would like to thank all that supported the Annual Golf Tournament as sponsors this year. Due to your support three $500 college scholarships and two $500 college scholarships from the Roy Pitts Memorial Fund were giving out.
Kaitlin Andress, Shelby Comito, and Hollie Schmidt were the K of C winners, while Loren Villagran and Chad Russ garnered the Roy Pitts Memorial scholarships.
Kaitlin Andress, the daughter of Lonnie & Dawn Andress of Athens, will attend UT-Tyler in Fall, 2008. A recent Athens HS graduate, she was a National Honor Society member, where she served as Historian for 20007/08. She was the Senior Class President (2007/08), and was a varsity tennis player. A member of Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Malakoff, she is a St. Vincent de Paul Society member, and participated in the Outreach Program. She plans to pursue her love of Mathematics and Tennis at UT-Tyler.
Shelby Comito, daughter of Joe & Rachelle Comito, will attend UT-Austin. A 2008 graduate of Athens HS, she ranked 1st in her class in grades 9 – 12. A Girl Scout, Shelby earned both the Gold and Silver Awards. She also was involved in Rotary Youth, One Act Play (second place, UIL State Competition), and was on the Track and Soccer teams.
Ms. Comito was also the National Honor Society President in grades 11 and 12. She attends Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, where she is a Scripture reader.
Hollie Schmidt, daughter of Richard & Janet Schmidt, is a graduate of Whitehouse HS, where she had a 3.68 GPA. She is a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Whitehouse. Ms. Schmidt is also a volunteer firefighter for the city of Whitehouse. She will attend Tyler Junior College in Fall, 2008 where she will enroll in the Nursing program.
Loren Villagran, daughter of William and Jeanine Villagran, is a Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church parishioner, where she is involved with the Youth Group and the Outreach Program. A Cross Roads HS graduate, she will attend TVCC in Fall, 2008. While in high school, she was the Senior Class Treasurer and was active in the Beta Club. She played Volleyball and Golf.
Chad Russ, son of Robert & Diane Russ, is a sophomore at TVCC-Athens. He is also a Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church parishioner, where he is an Altar Server.
The Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church Knights of Columbus Council #12253 Scholarship Fund was established in February, 2000. The Scholarship is funded by the Council’s annual Golf Tournament, which is supported by local individuals and businesses. This year’s committee members were Ed Ptacek, Dan Landi, Grady Daniel, and Sam Messina; Scholarship Chairman was John Perkins.
