Wallis honored in Washington D.C.

By JANICE ARNSDORFF - Editor

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mabank High School Principal Dr. Tommy Wallis, the Texas High School Principal of the Year, was honored at a black tie dinner last week in Washington, D.C. along with the High School and Middle School Principals of the Year from each state in the U.S.

Dr. Wallis was named Texas High School Principal of the Year by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. All the honorees from across the nation were recognized at the MetLife/NASSP Annual Principal of the Year Awards Banquet. (NASSP is the acronym for the National Association of Secondary School Principals.)

The National High School Principal of the Year honor was awarded to a woman from Alabama.

While Dr. Wallis didn’t win the nationwide accolade, he is proud as punch of the Mabank ISD.

“After listening to all the principals from across the country, it was clear to me that no one works harder than MHS to get results,” he said. “We are one of the best high schools in the country.”

Wallis explained that MHS has an “economically disadvantaged” rate of 50 percent, but that number is realistically higher, as not all students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches apply for that benefit.

“We have done so well,” Wallis said. “We are in the top 131 in the state in TAKS scores, and are often rated in Texas Monthly as one of the top 75 in the state. We do fantastic things in the Cedar Creek Lake area and everyone involved should be commended.”
