Dog training classes start Sept. 30

According to veteran dog trainer and behavior consultant, Joan B. Guertin, dogs don’t train themselves! They know how to be dogs. It is the human members of the family that are responsible for teaching dogs how to be good family pets.

The Friends Of Animals is sponsoring dog training classes at the Clinic in Gun Barrel City with a five week session, beginning Tuesday, September 30 for puppies from 8 weeks of age (with at least 2 of their required puppy shots) and dogs from five months and up, current on their vaccinations. Cost of the 5-week session is $95, with a portion of the fee going to Friends to help support their Low-cost spay/neuter program.

The sessions will include basic obedience, problem solving and behavior issues and management of problems. All family members are invited to attend.

The classes are based on solid principals grounded in gentle, positive, motivational training techniques. The student will learn to work quietly with their dogs, teaching them how to behave without force.

These basically are the tools of the Horse Whisperers, explains Ms Guertin, who has been in purebred dogs for fifty years and is celebrating her 49th year as a professional trainer.

“Dogs are much like children. They can function in a human society when they are aware of the boundaries and if they have been taught self discipline. Being pack oriented animal, dogs are looking for clearly defined leadership. That is what I teach through my Common Sense Dog Training,” Ms Guertin explains.
