Celebrate July 4th at the lake

By Travis Kees

The time for bright lit night skies, cookouts and remembering our forefathers fight for freedom is here.

Independence Day is upon us once again and the lake area should be a “hoppin.”

Kicking of this holiday weekend is Gun Barrel City’s July 4th Festival. It is being held at the Gun Barrel City Park from 5 p.m until 11 p.m.

There will of course be fireworks (which start at dark), food, live bands, games, a dunking booth, free fingerprinting & ID of kids. There will also be free fire chief hats for all the kids.

Admission and parking are free.

Kemp is hosting their July Fest at the Kemp city park on the fourth. The event starts at 1 p.m. with the parade starting at 2 p.m.

There will be BBQ, live bands, watermelon seed contests, pet contest, dunking booth, craft booths and a washer tournament.

In Seven Points the Volunteer Fire Department is hosting it’s annual fireworks show Friday night starting at 9 p.m.

Also in Seven Points the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4376 will be hosting a July 4th program at the post on Veteran’s Way in Seven Points.

Their program begins at 1 p.m. Friday, July 4, and will feature special speakers and children singing patriotic songs. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary members will also participate.

The hour-long program culminates with a balloon release to commemorates individual veterans.

Those present are invited to participate in this by attaching the names of beloved veterans to the balloons.

All are invited to stay as guests for a late luncheon hosted by the VFW 4376 Woman’s Auxiliary.

The American Legion Post 310 on 1908 South Gun Barrel Lane is hosting a small event with lots of old-time games including horseshoes, washers and the like.

They are also hosting a bake sale. Everyone is invited and it goes until everyone wears out.

In nearby Athens there is the Fireworks at the Fishery show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center one of the largest fireworks shows in East Texas. Fireworks begin at dark.

The day after the Fourth of July the Pinnacle Golf and Boat Club is hosting their Celebrate the 4th on the 5th Airshow and fireworks show.

Randy Ball, owner of fighter jets and a Pinnacle resident, alongside participants from the United States Navy, and active-duty Air Force pilots, will lead a memorable salute to our country.
